Son Doong – 3 Facts of The Largest Cave in the World

Son Doong Cave is one of the mysterious caves in the world and is the heart of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, located in Quang Binh province of Central Vietnam. After being recently explored and researched in 2009-2010 by British Cave Research Association, Son Doong cave has been opened and designed tour to the public since 2013. However, fewer people have seen the inside of Son Doong cave than have stood on the top of Everest mountain.

Son Doong Cave was discovered by a local people on a rainy day

Son Doong is discovered by a local people 18 years ago by a local hunter named Ho Khanh in 1991. Not by geologists, scientists nor any professional cave explorer. It is the biggest cave and a very important geological site. Ho Khanh did not really recognize how big his discovery was.

Son Dong is actually huge

With more than 200 meters width, 150 meters height and at least 6.500 meters length. And explorers said that they were not able to explore it fully. British Cave Research Association have recently explored that Son Doong is much larger than the world’s biggest known cave. According to this team, the biggest and largest section of Son Doong Cave is five kilometers in length, 200 meters height and about 150 meters width. At that time, Son Doong cave has replaced to take pole position as the largest cave in all over the world.

Son Doong Cave is hide below another cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang, though its entry passage is extremely difficult to traverse. There is a large amount of fast flowing water inside Son Doong. The explorer will set foot on 6.5 kilometers along the cave. Moreover, the explorers will spend at least 6 hours trekking through a 10-kilometer long forest path from Truong Son to reach the mouth of Son Doong Cave. Then prepare to explore the biggest cave in the world.

You can imagine trekking straight into the depths of the world’s largest cave on an expedition unlike any other. A cave is so massive that 747 could fly through its largest cavern. Space is so mesmerizing that it forces you to question whether you are still on the planet at all. Foreign landscapes found nowhere else, enormous stalagmites are rising from the ground and statuesque stalactites hanging from the ceiling.

Jungles emerge from inside the cave, scenes are so surreal that you have to see to believe it. Misty clouds envelop the whole scene, a result of the cave’s own localized weather system. Passages adorned with ancient fossils offer evidence of the millions of years that have passed on this Earth.

As you approach the jungle just outside the entrance, the rush of cool wind that cascades out brings to life everything inside of you. Hazy, cold and exhilarating, it is apparent that there’s something magical waiting just beyond the opening to the cave

Son Doong – a 5 million years old cave

When an underground river ran through, between layers of sinking limestone area along a geological fault, it formed Son Doong cave. Through millions of years, the water eroded the rock and formed a huge tunnel under the ground between mountains. At some parts of the caves, the loose ceiling fell off forming big holes which enlarged gradually by the chemical influences.
Amazing formation and sceneries of the cave

Son Doong is the most impressive karst cave not only in Vietnam but also in the World. Apart from amazing stalactites and stalagmites that amaze any people, just beyond the big cave hole is a luxuriant forest. The forest is the habitat of many monkeys and flying foxes. Giant trees, tropical palms, ferns of many types and creeping plants form particular canopies from cave mouth to inside.

Moreover, the cave floor and wall where water available grow thick layers of moss and alga. That is a home of many different insects and small animals, you can see many strange kinds of them.

Once inside of the cave, you will find yourself lost in something like the fairy world. You can see some ancient lakes, falls and underground rivers. These make the cave of a living body with full of sights and sounds. In addition, light beams pass through ceiling reflecting on rocks as the special play of nature. There are waves of stalagmite on the cave floor with rock ball look like pearls. All above make it the amazing sight that you can only find in Hollywood grand movies.
